Through in-person interviews and an online survey with nearly 350 people, we gathered information about community concerns around local leadership qualities, the value of emotional intelligence, and the application of mindfulness-based interventions to move the needle for community-identified challenges. The assessment catalogues existing efforts, local champions, and opportunity to build collaboration. This phase begins the work of leveraging pockets of success and passion into an organized, connected web of practitioners, leaders, and funders.

Site visitS to innovators

All over the country, there are examples of robust mindfulness programs that offer insights into innovation, progress, and pitfalls. Site visits help us refine our strategy and build partnerships with innovators such as the Crim Fitness Foundation (Flint, MI), where 75% of children say mindfulness helps them focus, 60% use mindfulness to calm down, and 55% of students say it helps them avoid fights. We also focus on learning opportunities and attended a conference featuring the research of scores of leading neuroscientists highlighting their results in areas of workplace engagement, resilience and well-being, plus the impact of mindfulness on focus, self-awareness, and other “super powers” of today’s leaders.


The Summit, planned for June 2019, will be a collaborative learning opportunity for local leaders and stakeholders to gather with subject-matter experts in neuroscience, social-emotional learning, design theory, psychology, and leadership training. Held here in Jackson Hole, the Summit will give community champions an opportunity to roll up their sleeves with practitioners and field leaders from around the country to create a meaningful dialogue around the aggregated assessment results and develop a plan for Jackson’s future. The result of the Summit will be a roadmap for community-wide acquisition of the practical skills that are the fundamental building blocks of civility and problem-solving. It will also include tools for measuring progress as we move ahead to Phases 2&3.

In phase two, we will implement the strategic plan developed during the Summit.

Phase 3: Continuous Innovation — Refining, Honing, Responding

Phase three will focus on improving our approach and honing our tactics as we assess the success to-date.
